From Colombia to Community: How Red Bean Harvest Is Building a Connected Coffee Experience

Coffee connects people in countless ways. It brings families and communities together, supports the livelihoods of producers, and travels through a complex network of farmers, processors, exporters, roasters, and businesses before finally reaching the consumer.

For Red Bean Harvest Coffee, those connections are at the heart of the business.

Founded by Maria and Max, Red Bean Harvest brings specialty Colombian coffee to consumers while highlighting the people, places, and processes behind every cup. Their work is rooted in the belief that coffee should be more than a product. It can also be a way to connect consumers with producers, create greater transparency throughout the value chain, and recognize the work that goes into producing coffee.

Max & Maria Bustamante

A Different Perspective on Colombian Coffee

For Maria, coffee has always been part of her life.

Growing up in Colombia, coffee was a part of family gatherings and everyday routines. Afternoon coffee was a time for families and friends to sit together, share a pastry, and connect. Those experiences stayed with Maria and eventually became part of the inspiration behind Red Bean Harvest Coffee.

Her professional background in sustainability, food systems, and international development also shaped the business she wanted to build. Having seen the challenges facing farmers and rural communities, she wanted to create a business that could recognize the work and value of coffee producers.

“At least in my country and in Latin America overall, there is so much need, and farmers are often left behind. They don't always get the value that they deserve. That's why I wanted to have a business that could recognize the extra work they are doing.”

That mission is reflected in the coffee that Red Bean Harvest sources and the stories it shares with customers. Maria and Max focus on single-origin coffees and micro lots while highlighting producers, farming practices, varieties, and processing methods.

Their goal is to give consumers a better understanding of what makes each coffee unique while creating a stronger connection between producers and consumers.

Putting People Behind the Product

For Maria and Max, specialty coffee is about more than flavor.

Traceability and transparency are central to how they approach the business. They want customers to understand not only what they are tasting, but where the coffee came from, how it was produced, and the people behind it.

As Maria explains:

“You might tell someone the score and tasting notes, but what is the variety? What is the process? Who was the producer? Those details are valuable.”

That perspective sets Red Bean Harvest apart from simply selling coffee as a finished product. Maria and Max want consumers to see the larger system behind their morning cup.

Max describes this as an opportunity to help people understand the journey coffee takes from farm to cup, including the logistics, production, and challenges involved along the way.

“What does it take for coffee to go from the coffee farm to your cup? There is a whole process and logistics chain involved. I want people to understand what it takes to get the coffee from the farm all the way to their country, their table, and their cup.”

For Red Bean Harvest Coffee, making that process more visible is part of creating a more informed and connected coffee community.

Bringing Coffee to the Community

That commitment to connection has expanded through the launch of Harvest & Bloom Coffee Truck, a mobile extension of Red Bean Harvest.

The idea grew as Maria and Max looked for a way to bring their coffee directly to consumers rather than waiting for customers to find them. Today, the truck allows Red Bean Harvest to bring specialty coffee to neighborhoods, parks, community events, private events, and local festivals.

The truck also gives Maria and Max another platform to introduce people to specialty coffee and share the stories behind the product.

For Max, the shift to a mobile coffee business has required Red Bean Harvest Coffee to adapt to an entirely new set of challenges.

“Everything changes when you move from selling bags of coffee and working with roasteries or farmers' markets to actually serving the coffee.”

The transition has changed how they operate day to day, adding another layer of logistics as they establish consistent locations and build new connections with customers.

But that learning process has also created new opportunities. By meeting customers face-to-face, Maria and Max can answer questions, introduce people to different coffees, and build relationships within the communities they serve.

For Maria, those moments are an important reminder of why they started.

“When you start hearing those comments, you feel like, okay, we're doing something good. The hard work is paying off.”

Growing a Business Through Community Support

The growth of Red Bean Harvest has also been shaped by the people and organizations that have supported Maria and Max along the way.

When they first started the business, they were working with limited capital and trying to determine how to build the different pieces of the company. Along the way, mentorship, local connections, and guidance have helped them navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and continue moving the business forward.

As Maria explains:

“About four years ago, we started connecting with people at Arlington Economic Development, SCORE mentors, and other local businesses just to get feedback and recommendations. That support has paid off because it helped us with different steps along the way. It has also opened the door to new collaborations. Through Grow to Market, for example, we were able to connect with other coffee businesses around a shared idea: creating a financial literacy fund for women coffee growers. For us, that is what community is really about, not only receiving support as we grow, but finding ways to bring people together, share opportunities, and create impact that can reach all the way back to coffee-producing communities

Maria's experience has reinforced her belief that entrepreneurs need more than financial resources to succeed. Mentorship, connections, education, and opportunities to build relationships can be just as valuable.

That support has also shaped Maria's perspective on what women entrepreneurs need to succeed. Her experience has shown her the value of mentorship, collaboration, and community, particularly when building a business with limited resources. For Maria, having people who can offer guidance, feedback, and connections can make a meaningful difference as entrepreneurs work to grow their businesses.

For Maria, resilience remains an essential part of that journey.

“You always have to keep expanding and growing.”

That mindset has been important as Maria and Max have navigated the different stages of building Red Bean Harvest. From starting the business with limited capital to developing relationships with mentors and local organizations, expanding into the Harvest & Bloom Coffee Truck, and continuing to find new ways to connect with customers, their path has required them to adapt as the business evolves.

For Maria, that growth is not only about expanding the size of the business. It is also about continuing to learn, building stronger relationships, and creating new opportunities to share the stories behind the coffee. The support they have received along the way has helped make continued growth possible, while also reinforcing the importance of creating those same kinds of opportunities for other entrepreneurs.

A Vision for the Future of Coffee

Maria and Max are continuing to build on the foundation they have created through Red Bean Harvest, with Harvest & Bloom representing a new opportunity to take their coffee and their mission directly into the community.

In the near term, they hope to grow the mobile coffee experience, develop new community partnerships, and create more opportunities for coffee education and coffee experiences. At the same time, they want to continue strengthening relationships with coffee producers in Colombia and finding new ways for customers to understand the journey from farm to cup.

For Maria, the long-term vision is about making that journey more visible, personal, and tangible. One day, she and Max hope to establish a brick-and-mortar space that goes beyond the traditional coffee shop—a place where customers can experience the coffee supply chain in one location. From learning about the farmers and regions where the coffee is grown to exploring varieties, processing methods, roasting, brewing, and ultimately enjoying the final cup, the space would bring the farm-to-cup story to life.

The goal is to create an immersive coffee experience where education and connection are as important as the coffee itself, giving customers a deeper understanding of the people, work, and processes behind every cup.

“Most importantly, I want people to feel connected to those coffee farms and the producers.”

That vision reflects what Maria and Max have been building from the beginning: a business where coffee becomes an entry point for education, relationships, entrepreneurship, and community.

As Red Bean Harvest continues to grow, they hope to expand their reach through Harvest & Bloom, coffee education, community partnerships, and stronger relationships with producers. Their goal is not simply to sell more coffee, but to create a more transparent and connected coffee experience for everyone involved.

Ultimately, Red Bean Harvest reflects Maria and Max’s belief that coffee can bring people closer to the places and people behind what they consume. By sharing Colombian coffee alongside the stories of its producers and the journey behind each cup, they hope to create greater appreciation for the work that makes coffee possible.

For Maria and Max, the future of Red Bean Harvest is about helping people understand where their coffee comes from, who makes it possible, and why those connections matter.

And with every cup served through Red Bean Harvest and Harvest & Bloom, they continue building that connection—one customer, one producer, and one coffee story at a time.
